Client: Sussex County Community College | Role: Creative Director & Designer | Designer: Noelle Maynard | Editor: Dani Faltraco
Project
I served as the Creative Director of my local community college’s annual literary magazine, the Idiom & Image. This magazine is a publication dedicated to highlighting student work across fine art, photography, poetry, and prose. My role was to curate, direct, and work with a group of students to design the issue.
This issue of the Idiom & Image was the recipient of a Graphic Design USA Award.
Visual Style & theme
The magazine focused around the theme of "Renewal.” We were heavily inspired by the definition of renewal: “an instance of resuming an activity after a state of interruption.” This lead to our visual theme of “starting and stopping” and “breaking and connecting.” We frequently break words apart using their phonetics, such as “re-new-al” and “in-dex.” This thematically represented the “renewal” that happened during the school year at SCCC. Classes returned to in-person, people were able to gather, and the atmosphere lightened. But renewal is a process, which we, and the featured artists, explored within the magazine.
